Scripture Anchor

"For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse."

(Romans 1:20)

Is this Guild for me?

If you want to move past shallow cultural slogans and develop a rigorous, historically grounded ability to think clearly about ultimate reality, the Philosophy Guild is designed for you. Fulfilling the Great Commission requires us to dismantle intellectual barriers that keep people from the Gospel, which is why this Guild is tailored to equip different believers according to their specific callings:

Philosophy
Guild

For the Layperson

If you want to develop solid critical thinking skills so that you can navigate complex cultural issues with confidence, these workshops will help you build a structured, unshakeable intellectual foundation.

For Parents

If you are watching your children face hostile, secular philosophies in modern classrooms, this Guild will equip you to identify those hollow ideas and teach your family how to spot logical fallacies in daily life.

For Church Leaders & Pastors

If you want to protect your congregation from deceptive intellectual trends, these workshops provide a structured framework to train lay leaders to dismantle false arguments with gentleness and grace.

For Missionaries

If you are ministering in culturally diverse settings, this Guild gives you the philosophical tools to build intellectual bridges and establish common ground with skeptics who do not accept the authority of Scripture.

For the Curious Learner

If you are simply hungry to understand the deep questions of reality, truth, and human nature, you will find a highly encouraging community of thinkers here.

What kind of work is involved?

We believe that loving God with all your mind requires a standard of intellectual rigor, although we have designed this work to be entirely manageable for busy adults. Because there are no term papers or academic exams, the entire weekly commitment remains a highly manageable two to three hours:

#1

Rigorous and Clear
Materials:

You will not be asked to plow through dense, modern academic journals that are written to confuse rather than clarify. Instead, your weekly reading consists of five to ten pages of high-quality, accessible materials that introduce you to classical metaphysics and logical principles.

#2

A Balance of Head
and Hands:

The Philosophy Guild is not about playing intellectual games, because we want you to use what you learn to build relationships and make disciples. Your assignments are split evenly between mental study and active, everyday practice, which might include identifying logical fallacies in modern media, analyzing cultural statements, or practicing a Socratic dialogue on classical arguments with a friend.

#3

Relational Socratic
Mentorship:

Rather than sitting in isolation and watching passive lectures, you will participate in live, weekly Zoom cohorts capped at approximately twenty peers. Under the Socratic guidance of a vetted ICA mentor, you will actively discuss how historic philosophical truths apply to the trials and triumphs of modern life.

How does this Guild connect to the rest of the ICA?

The Philosophy Guild does not stand alone, because classical philosophy acts as
the intellectual handmaiden to theology, exegesis, and apologetics:

The Link to the
Bible Guild

When we study manuscript reliability or biblical history, we use logic and historical evidence to defend the text, which means the reasoning skills you master here provide the necessary foundation for serious biblical study.

The Link to the
Theology Guild

Systematic theology uses precise terms to define doctrines like the Trinity and the incarnation, so the metaphysical tools we study in this Guild help protect our theology from logical contradictions and errors.

The Link to the
Virtue Guild

Our model recognizes that intellectual training is incomplete without moral training, which is why classical philosophy directly informs the Thomistic virtue framework that helps us habituate character and sanctification.

Our Hubs & Curriculum Pathways

To ensure your training provides a clear pathway from basic introduction to mastery, the Philosophy Guild is organized into four foundational Hubs. Click on any Hub below to expand the description and view our active workshops. Because our curriculum is constantly expanding to meet the needs of our student body, we regularly add new options to our live block schedules:

1. Logic Hub

Why it exists: The Logic Hub exists because God has designed our minds to discover truth, although false arguments and deceptive reasoning constantly threaten to lead us astray. This Hub integrates into the Philosophy Guild by teaching you how to analyze statements, construct sound arguments, and easily dismantle the common informal fallacies that dominate modern cultural discussions. By mastering the basic rules of logic, you will develop the mental armor necessary to protect your faith and help other believers escape intellectual confusion.

Scripture Anchor: "We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God..." (2 Corinthians 10:5)

2. Thomism Hub

Why it exists: The Thomism Hub exists to introduce you to the classical realism and metaphysical framework of Thomas Aquinas, which has served as the intellectual backbone of Christian defense for centuries. This Hub integrates into our curriculum because it demonstrates how faith and reason work in perfect harmony rather than in conflict. By studying these classical principles, you will gain a robust understanding of nature, grace, and human existence, equipping you to engage modern secularism with an unshakeable foundation.

Scripture Anchor: "'For in him we live and move and have our being.' As some of your own poets have said, 'We are his offspring.'" (Acts 17:28)

3. Natural Philosophy Hub

Why it exists: The Natural Philosophy Hub exists because God's invisible attributes are clearly seen through the created order, leaving humanity without any intellectual excuse. This Hub integrates into the larger Guild by teaching you how to defend the existence and nature of God using cosmological, teleological, and moral arguments. By exploring how science and philosophy meet, you will be equipped to show skeptics that the physical universe points directly to a supreme, intelligent Creator.

Scripture Anchor: "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands." (Psalm 19:1)

4. Historical Philosophy Hub

Why it exists: The Historical Philosophy Hub exists because modern cultural ideas did not appear out of nowhere, so we must understand the history of Western thought to avoid being taken captive by deceptive philosophies. This Hub integrates into the Philosophy Guild by tracing how ideas shifted from classical realism to modern skepticism and relativism. By learning how these historical shifts occurred, you will understand exactly why modern culture thinks the way it does, which will allow you to address the root causes of skepticism rather than just the surface-level symptoms.

Scripture Anchor: "See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition... rather than on Christ." (Colossians 2:8)
