Nel Brace
Professional Biography
Nel Brace holds a Bachelors of Arts Degree as well as the Diploma of Higher Education from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. She earned a Masters Degree in Philosophy and Biblical Studies at Southern Evangelical Seminary. Nel’s interest in apologetics and the Christian mind was prompted by her interaction with Muslims and those of other world views at Speaker’s Corner in London. Here she became aware of her personal lack of training in Christian thinking and the need for such training in the church at large. Together with her husband Simon she is pursuing what she believes is her calling, to be a witness to Muslims and others who do not share the Christian faith and to be instrumental in the resurgence of Christian thinking throughout the church. Nel currently serves as a chapter advisor for Ratio Christi NWU Potchefstroom. Simon and Nel have four children and Nel also serves in the distinguished position of “homeschooling Mom.” This is by far her biggest challenge yet!
Talks
Textual Criticism for the Rest of us
The Bible is an ancient text. The versions thereof that we have before us today are the end results of the processes of copying and translation over centuries. Can we have confidence that what we read today is an accurate representation of what the biblical authors wrote? This talk offers an introduction to textual criticism, the art and science of determining the original biblical text.
Christianity and Islam: Essentially the same?
It is often claimed that Christianity and Islam, as Abrahamic faiths, are essentially similar religions. This introductory talk evaluates this claim in light of the core essentials of the Christian faith and Islam’s agreement/disagreement with these tenets of orthodoxy. Effective ways of using these essential doctrines in evangelism and outreach to Muslims are also addressed.
The Christian Mind as Pertaining to Women.
The study of theology proper, philosophical theology, and apologetics has traditionally been dominated by male thinkers. The relatively small number of noteworthy female scholars in these disciplines attest to this. Why is this the case? Is the content of these disciplines of little or no value for women? What is a Christian woman's responsibility as pertaining to her mind? And is there spiritual and practical value in cultivating well developed Christian thinking? This presentation will explore these and other related questions and will evaluate the importance of the life of the mind as pertaining to the Christian woman.
Logic
Can you deal with the modern day onslaught of information in an orderly and systematic manner or do you find yourself overwhelmed by all you read, see, and hear? Do you merely drift in the direction of popular opinion or are you able to recognize arguments and evaluate them critically. This talk will focus on the importance of logic (the forgotten discipline of our time) and will aim to equip listeners with the ability to recognize and identify informal fallacies
