The Missing Middle
Currently, there is a significant gap between the introductory discipleship of the local church and the academic rigor of the seminary degree. Believers are often left with an overwhelming buffet of online content that transfers information but rarely cultivates character or equips them to engage the culture. The Institute for Christian Apologetics was built to occupy this "Middle Ground." We provide accessible, specialized training designed not just for information acquisition, but for virtue formation.

Who is the Institute For?
The Institute for Christian Apologetics seeks to "reach the pews" by training men and women, helping small groups, and providing practical instruction and application in virtue, intellectual growth, and vocational training. Thus, we sharpen the mind, train the hands, and form the heart by translating classical theology and apologetics into everyday discipleship. Here's how the Institute serves the diverse needs of the body of Christ:
Individuals
You do not need a Ph.D. to be a faithful ambassador for Christ, but you do need to be equipped. Whether you are a believer looking for a historical anchor to navigate your own doubts, a professional wanting to confidently engage coworkers in the secular public square, or a Christian educator seeking verifiable continuing education, the institute provides a clear, accessible pathway to mastery.
Small Groups
Apologetics is not meant to be learned in a vacuum. The ICA is perfectly designed for communal discipleship. Small groups can progress through specific workshops together, having everything they need to function independently. However, we could even schedule live, mentor-led training for your specific small group. If everyone is a member of ICA, it's easy to schedule, and if not, contact the Director, Thomas McCuddy, for a consultation on how the ICA can help your group.
Local Churches
The ICA is designed to connect the Seminary with the local church, and thus it exists to serve as a vital, high-level arm of your own local discipleship programs. The ICA can train lay leaders and provide continuing formation for experienced ministers. Churches may contact the Executive Director to explore on-site training by an available mentor.
Families
The most critical battleground for worldview formation is not the university campus; it is the dinner table. We help parents shift from merely managing their children's behavior to actively forming their hearts and minds. Through sections like the Ministry Guild, we equip parents and grandparents to confidently address their children's difficult intellectual doubts and proactively prepare teenagers for the cultural challenges they will inevitably face.
Christian Schools
The ICA serves as a connective training hub for the broader kingdom. Thus, we seek to work with Christian schools to train their teachers not only individually, but collectively. Schools may request training through the institution, with live interaction with mentors, for their after-school teacher conferences, or work with mentors to identify the specific needs that the ICA can meet.
Other Ministries
The ICA is not in competition with other ministries. What we do not do, we need others to provide, and what we can provide, we offer to others. In this way, we want to build the kingdom together with other ministries by training staff, supporting their efforts, and championing their good work.
Our Core Objectives
The Institute will expand over the years, but we keep key objectives in mind in all we do.
Equip with Rigor: Providing specialized apologetics and theology for the broader church.
Translate Philosophy into Practice: Applying classical theology to daily ministry, family life, and cultural engagement.
Foster Relational Mentoring: Combining passive learning with active, synchronous discipleship unconstrained by physical boundaries.
Cultivate Virtue: Moving beyond mere knowledge acquisition into habituating intellectual and moral virtue.
Provide Professional Development: Offering a structured pathway of formal certification and verifiable continuing education credits for Christian educators.
Beyond Passive Learning
Every workshop is built to accommodate both asynchronous learning and live discussions.
READ (The Foundation)
Build a strong intellectual foundation through carefully selected reading assignments from published material or personally crafted by our workshop creators.
WATCH (The Instruction)
Absorb complex theological concepts at your own pace through high-caliber video lectures delivered by experts in the field.
DO (The Habituation)
Take concepts out of the abstract and habituate them into daily life through highly actionable, practical assignments.
MEET (The Mentorship)
Participate in live, synchronous mentorship cohorts via Zoom to foster Socratic dialogue and real-time relational discipleship.

A Pathway to Excellence
The Institute for Christian Apologetics offers a unique organization of its training with pathways to develop personally, spiritually, and ministerially. To bridge the gap between Sunday school and formal seminary, we organize our training into a three-tier model:
Guilds
Hubs group together within particular guilds. Completion of a set number of hubs within a guild earns a mastery certification.
Hubs
Workshops are grouped together under specialized hubs. Completion of a certain number of workshops in each hub earns a concentration certificate.
Workshops
The individual workshops where you transform the mind and train the hands to work. Completion of any workshop with live videos earns a certificate.

Our Story and
Our Future
The ICA was born out of a strategic operational partnership between Southern Evangelical Seminary and Families of Virtue Ministries. By combining SES's legacy of academic excellence and Thomistic philosophy with FOV's expertise in Thomistic virtue and family discipleship, the Institute serves as a unified front to engage the academy, the church, and the home.
The Institute is rapidly expanding to serve as a primary engine of equipping for the global church. Our roadmap includes finalizing partnerships with other ministries and educational institutions, and rolling out a "Resource Menu" of common conferences that are taught live in churches by seasoned Institute mentors.
